Global emissions of greenhouse gases have increased to unprecedented levels despite global efforts to reduce them. The third part of the report -and last- reference on Climate Change issued every seven years by the United Nations reveals that the emissions due to human activity of these harmful gases are to blame for global warming and has grown faster between 2000 and 2010 than in any of the previous three decades.

It is urgent to reverse this trend and this is why Concelex is committed to calculate and offset their anual emissions.

Concelex generates emissions from employee commuting, energy consumption, flights and hotel stays. The company has chosen to offset these emissions by investing in an equivalent number of tonnes of carbon credits generated by a green project which generates clean energy from the capture and combustion of landfill gas.
 
Measuring its footprint and offsetting its unavoidable greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions is a key component of the Concelex sustainability strategy. This carbon zero emissions strategy has been implemented in Romania with the help of Blue Planet and Carbon Expert, official Allcot partners for Eastern Europe.

Environmental Project Selected

Offsetting CO2 emissions is based on the voluntary contribution of an amount of money proportional to the tonnes of CO2 emitted which have not been able to be reduced by other means. Specifically, that money is used to buy carbon credits with each one being equivalent to one tonne of CO2 emitted. This economic contribution is dedicated to projects in developing countries. Concelex has chosen a project, which consists in the energy reuse of biogas from a landfill and it is validated and verificated by Verified Carbon Standard.

Specifically, the Project consists of a collection, transport and treatment system for landfill gas with production of electricity for self-consumption and incorporation to the national grid. Since the major constituent of landfill gas is methane, which has a global warming potential (GWP) of 21 times CO2, the Project will reduce atmospheric degradation by capturing and burning the methane component of the biogas to generate clean electricity and displace the requirement for electricity generated from fossil fuel sources.

Also, it is important to note that this project not only generates environmental benefits, but also generates wealth in the area, as jobs were created for their development.
